Characterization of human periosteum-derived progenitor cells(PDPCs), which have similar characteristics with mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs), was performed in an attempt to use them in cell therapy. Proliferation potential, production of metabolites, cell cycle pattern, and immunophenotypes of PDPCs were investigated and characterized. Futhermore, cardiomyogenesis of PDPCs was carried out to examine their differentiation potential. PDPCs were found to be more proliferative than the other adult stem cells although PDPCs were isolated from old donors and expanded up to high passages. Expression of cardiomyocyte-specific mRNAs such as GATA-4, Nkx2.5, desmin was verified by in vitro analysis. It was clear that PDPCs can be used as a superior cell source for cell-based therapies.
